Why It Matters

Electronic Waste Is a Growing Crisis

The world generates over 50 million metric tons of electronic waste every year — and less than 20% of it is recycled properly. Electronics contain hazardous materials including lead, mercury, cadmium, and flame retardants that leach into soil and groundwater when dumped in landfills.

But e-waste is also a missed opportunity. Electronics are packed with recoverable precious metals — gold, silver, copper, and palladium — that can be extracted and reused, reducing the environmental cost of mining new materials.

When you recycle your electronics through S&M Telecommunications, you are not just decluttering — you are actively preventing toxic pollution, recovering valuable materials, and keeping devices out of communities and ecosystems where they cause lasting harm.

🌱
Prevent Toxic Soil Contamination
Lead, mercury, and cadmium in electronics leach into soil and groundwater when improperly disposed. Recycling keeps these toxins out of the environment permanently.
Recover Valuable Materials
One ton of circuit boards contains up to 800× more gold than one ton of gold ore. Recycling recovers these materials without destructive mining.
🔒
Protect Your Personal Data
Devices thrown in regular trash are a data security risk. We destroy all stored data before recycling — your personal and business information stays protected.
📋
Stay Compliant
Many states have laws requiring proper e-waste disposal. Business clients receive a Certificate of Disposal for compliance documentation.

Data Security

Certified Data Destruction Included

Your old electronics are packed with sensitive data — passwords, financial records, client files, personal photos, browsing history, and more. Simply deleting files or doing a factory reset is not enough. With the right tools, deleted data can still be recovered from a discarded device.

S&M Telecommunications performs certified data destruction on every storage device before it is processed for recycling. Business clients receive a Certificate of Data Destruction for compliance and audit purposes.

01
Device Check-In & Logging
Every device is logged with a serial number, make, and model upon arrival. You receive a receipt confirming device intake.
02
Storage Media Identification
All storage components — HDDs, SSDs, flash memory, and embedded storage — are identified and flagged for destruction.
03
Certified Data Wipe or Physical Destruction
Storage is wiped using DoD-standard overwrite methods. Non-wipeable or damaged drives are physically shredded — no data survives.
04
Certificate of Data Destruction Issued
Business clients receive a signed certificate documenting the device, serial number, method of destruction, and date. Audit-ready.
05
Responsible Recycling of Remaining Parts
After data destruction, all remaining components are sorted and processed for materials recovery — zero goes to landfill.

Environmental Impact

Every Device Recycled Makes a Difference

Electronics recycling is not just about keeping devices out of landfills. It is about recovering the energy, materials, and resources that went into creating them — and preventing the cost of extracting those same materials again.

Every computer you recycle instead of landfilling prevents approximately 1,400 pounds of CO₂ equivalent emissions. Every phone recycled recovers materials that would otherwise require new mining to replace.

🌍
CO₂ Reduction
Recycling prevents the energy-intensive process of mining and manufacturing new materials from scratch.
🥇
Precious Metal Recovery
Gold, silver, copper, and palladium are recovered and re-enter supply chains — reducing demand for destructive mining.
💧
Groundwater Protection
Keeping lead and mercury out of landfills directly protects local water supplies from contamination.

FAQs

Electronics Recycling Questions Answered

What electronics do you accept for recycling?
We accept computers, laptops, monitors, printers, phones, tablets, televisions, servers, networking equipment, cables, batteries, and most other consumer and business electronics. CRT monitors and large televisions may carry a small processing fee. Contact us before drop-off if you are unsure about a specific item.
Is data destruction really included, and what does it involve?
Yes — all storage devices go through certified data destruction before recycling. We use DoD 5220.22-M standard 7-pass overwrite for hard drives and SSDs. Drives that cannot be reliably wiped due to damage are physically shredded. Simply deleting files or doing a factory reset is not secure — our process ensures no data can ever be recovered from recycled devices.
Is electronics recycling free?
Most standard consumer electronics — computers, phones, tablets, cables, and batteries — are accepted free of charge. Some items with hazardous components or special handling requirements, such as large televisions and CRT monitors, may carry a small processing fee. We are transparent about any fees before you schedule a drop-off or pickup.
Do you offer business pickup for large volumes of equipment?
Yes. We offer scheduled volume pickups for businesses decommissioning IT equipment, clearing server rooms, or upgrading office technology. Whether you have 10 devices or 10,000, we coordinate a pickup that works for your timeline and provides complete documentation for your compliance records. Contact us to schedule a business assessment.
What documentation do business clients receive?
Business clients receive a Certificate of Data Destruction for each storage device processed, documenting the device serial number, make, model, method of destruction, and processing date. We also issue a Certificate of Disposal confirming that all equipment was recycled through our program. Both certificates are accepted for HIPAA, FACTA, and other regulatory compliance purposes.
Where does my recycled electronics actually go?
After data destruction, devices are disassembled and sorted by material type — metals, plastics, glass, and circuit boards are all separated. These materials are then processed by certified downstream recyclers for materials recovery. Precious metals like gold, silver, and copper are recovered and re-enter manufacturing supply chains. Nothing is exported illegally or sent to developing countries — our zero-landfill commitment applies to the entire downstream chain.
Why can't I just throw old electronics in the trash?
Electronics in standard trash end up in landfills where toxic materials — including lead, mercury, cadmium, and flame retardants — leach into soil and groundwater over time. This contaminates local water supplies and ecosystems for years or decades. Additionally, many states have laws prohibiting the disposal of electronics in regular trash, making improper disposal a potential legal liability for businesses. Recycling is the responsible and, in many jurisdictions, the legally required option.
